As a part of your union contract through CIR, the County of Los Angeles provides you with group disability insurance coverage. This includes a short term and a long term plan. We offer residents and fellows who are completing their training the opportunity to obtain permanent disability income protection without having to satisfy any medical underwriting requirements. Through this program, residents and fellows can protect their new income levels and obtain specialty specific coverage at permanently discounted rates.
Guaranteed Issue Coverage
Eligible residents may obtain individual long term disability coverage that will provide as much as $12,500/month of coverage without regard to current or pre-existing health conditions. Lower limits are also available.
Discounted Gender Neutral Rates
The rates for this coverage are discounted and gender neutral. The discounted gender neutral rates can reduce the cost for female physicians by as much as 50% below the female rates that carriers typically charge.
Ability to Cover New and Future Income
Up to an additional $7,500/month of guaranteed future benefit is included in the coverage with no medical underwriting. This additional increase amount can be added annually and raises the total available amount to as much as $12,500 per month completely income tax free.
Ability to Customize Benefit Amount
Residents completing their training have the ability to apply for a lesser amount of coverage if they are pursuing a fellowship position or feel that their income potential will not require such a substantial amount of coverage.
The policy received through this program is the same exact specialty specific policy others must qualify medically for. These plans are only offered to you when completing your residency or fellowship and may not be offered again.
